Sodexo Marks One Year of Recycled Paper Napkin Program with Significant Environmental Impact Announcement

Enough energy saved to power 600 American homes for a year

GAITHERSBURG, Md., March 31, 2008 — Proving that simple acts can have a big impact, Sodexo announced today that after only one year, its switch to recycled napkins in 1,300 foodservice operations nationwide has resulted in saving nearly ten million gallons of water, more than 23,000 trees, half a million gallons of oil and five and a half million kilowatts of energy. The company began using two types of recycled napkins last year as part of a commitment to leadership in sustainability and to providing environment-friendly practices.  

Energy was saved because less power is used to recycle paper products than to create them from virgin material – enough was saved through the napkin program to power 600 American homes for an entire year! In addition, more than half a million gallons of oil were saved – 38 tanker trucks worth – and 41 tons of pollutants were kept out of the environment. Further, 4,131 cubic yards of paper were diverted from landfill space. This is enough to cover an entire football field with a two and a half feet deep stack of paper.

“These recycled products and dispensers that reduce waste are simple, easy and effective ways that Sodexo is helping our clients to be more environmentally responsible. These calculations demonstrate how little things add up to a truly significant impact by implementing environmental programs across our company,” said Arlin S. Wasserman, vice president for corporate citizenship for Sodexo. “Part of Sodexo’s sustainability commitment is to continually seek out and offer our clients effective ways that we can work together to help protect our environment.”

In addition, Sodexo is bringing the Xpressnap® napkin program to its client sites, which creates additional environmental savings. The program has resulted in a 25 to 50 percent reduction in the actual number of paper napkins used thanks to new dispensers that dispense a single napkin at a time.

The calculations are made by the Recycled Products Cooperative (RPC), which says that each ton of 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper that displaces a ton of virgin fiber paper saves 7,000 gallons of water, 4,100 kilowatt hours of electricity and prevents 60 pounds of pollutants from entering the atmosphere. In addition, use of recycled products helps protect wildlife habitat, diverts useful items from landfills (which saves both space and money), and helps preserve the earth's natural beauty.

• 50% off their first meal. Just bring a completed membership form to Hamilton Dining Room.
• Buy 3 meals, get 1 free after joining, and get up to 3 meals free
• 20% off all meals in Hamilton Dining Room after you get 3 meals free
• In addition, Cinch members will have the option to sign up for our e-mail list, so they get advance notice about our Dining Services theme meals (such as African American   Heritage, and Roadtrip to New Orleans)
• Environmentally-friendly materials as part of Sodexho's continuing effort to help promote sustainability, most Cinch advertising materials have been printed using Forest Stewardship Council certified fibers. Visit fsc.org for details, and look for more FSC-certified materials in the future.

CINCH coupons, punch card and keycards are only accepted with cash or credit card purchases Cinch membership expires at the end of the spring semester 2008, unused punch cards or free meals will not carry over to the fall semester. E-mail information will only be used by local Sodexo management to communicate Ohio Dominican University Dining Services events and will not be sold, traded, etc to anyone.

01/28/08 - Drink Milk

The milk we serve in Hamilton Dining Room is now certified as rBGH free. rBGH is one acronym used to describe recombinant bovine growth hormone, which is a synthetic growth hormone that's injected into milk cows to spur milk production.

A lot of consumers, for personal reasons, prefer that they and their family drink milk that is produced without the use of artificial growth hormones and our milk provider, Trauth Dairy is responding to that preference.

One of the most exciting changes this year has been our new online menus. The new menus feature complete nutritional labels with the click of a mouse. So now you can not only plan your meals based on what you believe is healthy, you can actually view nutritional labels that are linked straight to our Sodexho recipe book.

01/18/08 - Premium Deli Bar in Hamilton Dining Room!
Starting this spring semester, we revamped the existing Red Hot Chef line to make room for a bigger, better premium deli bar. The new deli bar features a great repertoire of premium breads and wraps, sauces and spreads and upscale meats and cheeses. Now all of our favorite International wraps from the past (like California BLT or Chicken Caesar) are available everyday. All of these sandwiches will be made to order by one of our great chefs.

Last semester we began using new napkin dispensers. By making this change we cut the usage and waste of napkins in our dining areas dramatically. Also, we began using SCA recycled paper products. Check out the statistics and see what the Ohio Dominican Community did just by using recycled napkins!
